Far enough that we design for remote resolution first, most issues are fixed without a visit, and schedule on-site work instead of improvising it.

Business in Charleston

What we actually see here, rather than what an IT company anywhere would say about anywhere.

Charleston's business base is unlike the rest of the metro, and the IT problems follow. Restaurants, hotels, bars, galleries, and retail dominate the peninsula, and every one of them is running a point-of-sale system, a guest network, a card reader, and usually a camera system. Frequently all on the same flat network, because each was installed by a different vendor who only cared about their own box.

That’s the single most common thing we’re called in to unpick here, and it matters more than it sounds. A guest network that can reach the point-of-sale is a card-data problem, not a convenience problem, and it’s the kind of thing that stays invisible until it is extremely visible.

The peninsula also has a real professional and creative sector, law, accounting, architecture, agencies, medical practices near MUSC, where the cost of an IT failure is almost never the downtime. It’s a client finding out. That changes what you should spend money on, and it usually means less on hardware and more on email security, identity, and backup.

Buildings here bring their own problems. A historic building with thick masonry walls defeats consumer wireless completely, and running new cable in one is a job with rules attached. Surveying properly before quoting isn’t optional in this part of town.

Questions from Charleston

The ones we’re asked by businesses in this part of the Lowcountry.

  • You’re based in Moncks Corner. Is that a problem for a Charleston business?

It’s honest to say it’s a forty-five-minute drive, so we don’t pretend otherwise. In practice the large majority of issues are resolved remotely and immediately; on-site work is scheduled, and for anything that stops a business we come. What you gain is a small team that answers the phone rather than a national franchise's ticket queue.

  • Our guest Wi-Fi and our point-of-sale are on the same network. How bad is that?

Bad, and common. Anyone on your guest network is on the same network as the system handling card payments, which is both a PCI problem and a straightforward security one. Separating them is usually a day of work and it is the first thing we look at in a hospitality business.

  • We are in a historic building and the Wi-Fi is unusable. Can that be fixed?

Yes, but not by adding another access point at random, which is what has usually already been tried. Thick masonry blocks 5GHz almost completely, so it needs a proper survey and access points placed against the building rather than against a floor plan. It’s a solvable problem and we do it with Ubiquiti equipment.

  • Do you handle PCI compliance?

We handle the network and system side of it: segmentation, patching, access control, logging, and the evidence you need to answer the questionnaire honestly. We aren’t a QSA and won’t sign off your assessment, and you should be wary of any IT company that says it will.
