Straight answers

23 questions, including the ones an IT company would normally rather you didn’t ask. If yours isn’t here, ask it. We’ll answer it and probably add it.

Working with us

What it’s like to be a client, and the questions people ask before becoming one.

  • How do I get started?

A free assessment, which is a conversation followed by a look at what you have. We spend twenty minutes on what you run and what keeps breaking, then, if it looks like a fit, we survey the network, the machines, the backups, and the accounts, and give you a written picture of where you stand. There’s no charge and no obligation at the end of it.

  • Do I have to sign a long contract?

No. We take one-off work with no contract at all, billed at our flat hourly rate, and our managed agreements aren’t built to trap anybody. A client who stays because leaving is painful isn’t a client, and the industry's habit of three-year lock-ins is a substitute for being worth keeping.

  • Are you too small to look after us?

It is a fair question and the honest answer is that it depends on what you need. We are a small team with 75+ years of experience between us, and we’re a better fit for businesses of roughly five to a hundred people than for an enterprise with its own IT department. Our largest client today is around a hundred users. If you need a 24/7 staffed help desk with fifty analysts, we aren’t it, and we’ll tell you that rather than take the work.

  • What happens if the person who knows our systems is unavailable?

Everything is documented and every one of us can reach it. Documentation is not a nice-to-have in a small team, it’s the thing that makes a small team safe to depend on. Configurations, credentials, network diagrams, and the reasoning behind decisions all live in our systems rather than in somebody's head. It’s also why we do not mind being asked this.

  • Can you work alongside the person who already does our IT?

Yes, and it’s a common arrangement. Plenty of businesses have an office manager or a partner who’s good with computers and has been holding things together for years. We can take the parts that need tools, licenses, and after-hours attention (monitoring, patching, backup, security) and leave the day-to-day with the person who already knows the business.

  • What if we want to leave?

You take everything with you. Your domain, your Microsoft or Google tenant, your data, your documentation, and your licenses are yours and are registered to you, not to us. We’ll hand over to whoever comes next and we will not make it difficult. An IT provider that holds your domain hostage is a risk you shouldn’t have accepted in the first place.

Cost and billing

Almost nobody in this industry publishes a number. Here are ours.

  • How much does managed IT cost?

It depends on how you buy, which is why there’s no single rate card. Some clients pay a flat monthly fee per site for monitoring and support with no per-user charge. Others pay per user per month, covering licensing plus endpoint support. Project and on-site work is $150/hour. Most clients combine two or three of those, and a short call is usually enough to give you a real number instead of a range.

  • What does on-site work cost?

$150/hour, flat. No call-out fee, no minimum, no different rate for evenings or for "emergency" work, and no travel charge anywhere in our seven on-site cities. The rate is the rate.

  • Do you charge for travel?

Not within the Charleston metro cities we cover on site. Further out, travel is agreed in advance and billed transparently, or we coordinate local hands, and we tell you which before you commit, not after something breaks.

  • Is there a minimum number of users?

No. We work with businesses from one person upward. Very small businesses are often the ones getting the worst value from IT: consumer equipment, no backup, and nobody to call. They are frequently where the fastest improvement is available.

  • Do you mark up hardware and licenses?

We’re transparent about it. Where we resell licensing there’s a margin, and we’ll tell you what the alternative costs if you would rather buy direct. We would rather you knew than found out.

Security and risk

The questions worth asking any IT provider, including us.

  • What’s the single most valuable thing a small business can do for security?

Turn on multi-factor authentication everywhere, especially on email. Almost every incident that reaches a small business starts with a password that was reused, guessed, phished, or bought, and a second factor stops the overwhelming majority of that cold. It is free with most business subscriptions and it’s worth more than any product you can buy.

  • How do you protect our machines?

Where a client has a Microsoft subscription we typically deploy Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. Where there is no Microsoft account, or a client would rather not pay for it, we deploy the Bitdefender engine built into NinjaOne. Either way it reports centrally to us rather than putting a warning on a screen nobody is watching.

  • What do you use for backup?

Axcient. The important part isn’t the brand though. It’s that backups are monitored, off site, and tested by restoring from them. An untested backup is a belief, not a backup, and the moment you find out is the worst possible moment.

  • Do you do penetration testing?

We do security testing in house instead of reselling it. Jonathan Mims is an EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacker, and our owner holds CCNA Security. For a formal, independent audit, the kind a regulator or an insurer wants, an independent third party is the right answer, and we’ll say so.

  • Will you help us answer a customer's security questionnaire?

Yes. We’ll work through it and tell you honestly which answers are already true, which need work first, and which are being asked of a business your size unreasonably. What we won’t do is help you answer yes to something that isn’t the case. That is a signature on a document, and it’s your signature.

  • Do you guarantee we will never be breached?

No, and nobody honest does. What good security buys is a much smaller chance of it happening, a much smaller blast radius when it does, and the ability to recover in hours instead of weeks. Any provider promising you immunity is either misinformed or selling something.

Practical questions

Response times, coverage, and how support actually works.

  • What are your hours?

Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm · 24/7 emergency support for managed clients. Emergency cover is genuine rather than a voicemail box: for managed clients, an out-of-hours call about something that has stopped the business reaches a person.

  • Do you publish a service-level agreement?

We don’t publish response-time guarantees, and the reason is that a published SLA from a small team is usually theatre. What we’ll do is tell you honestly how we work: calls are answered during staffed hours, most problems are resolved remotely within the hour, and anything that has stopped you working goes to the front of the queue. If a formal contractual SLA matters to your business, say so and we’ll negotiate one we can meet.

  • What areas do you cover?

On site: Moncks Corner, Goose Creek, Summerville, Charleston, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Hanahan. Remotely we support clients much further out, including Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Florence, Conway. We’re based in Moncks Corner and the team lives in Moncks Corner and Summerville.

  • Do you support home users?

Yes, though business is the main focus. Home Wi-Fi that doesn’t reach the whole house, cameras, and smart-home work are all things we do, and they’re billed at the same hourly rate with no contract.

  • Who will I be dealing with?

One of 3 people, all of whom live in Moncks Corner and Summerville. There’s no tier-one queue, no script, and no offshore hand-off. Jonathan Kitts is the owner and you’ll frequently deal with him directly.

  • How do I raise a problem?

Call (843) 312-9493, email support@kittsit.com, or use the portal. Emailing support opens a ticket automatically and reaches the whole team instead of one inbox. For anything that has stopped you working, call. Don’t raise a ticket and wait.
