IT Support for Retail, Restaurants and Hospitality

Point of sale that stays up, guest Wi-Fi that’s separate from it, and cameras that are recording when you need them.

We work with retail and hospitality operators across the Lowcountry, including a multi-location retailer and golf course operations. The pattern repeats everywhere: the point-of-sale system, the guest network, and the cameras all end up on one flat network because each was installed by a different vendor who only cared about their own box.

What we see in retail & hospitality

  • When the POS is down, you’re closed

There is no workaround for a register that cannot take payment on a Saturday. That makes the network behind it, and the connection it depends on, worth more attention than it usually gets.

  • Guest Wi-Fi on the payment network

The most common and most serious finding in this sector. Customers on the same network as the card terminals is both a real risk and a PCI problem.

  • Camera footage that isn't there

Retail and hospitality pull footage: for disputes, incidents, and staffing questions. Which is when people discover retention was thirty days and the incident was six weeks ago.

  • Multiple sites, no consistency

Each location was set up by whoever was available, so every site is different and nothing can be supported the same way twice.

PCI and the guest network

If your card terminals share a network with guest Wi-Fi, that’s both a security problem and a compliance one. It widens your PCI scope to cover equipment you don’t control. Separating them is usually a configuration change on hardware already installed, and it makes the annual self-assessment questionnaire considerably easier to answer honestly.

Questions from this sector

The ones we get asked most by retail & hospitality businesses.

  • Is our guest Wi-Fi separate from our card terminals?

Frequently not, and this is worth checking today. A separate network name and password doesn’t create separation. If a guest device can reach the terminals, printers, or back-office computers, the networks are not actually apart. It puts customer traffic inside your PCI scope, and in most sites the equipment to fix it’s already installed and only needs configuring.

  • Our POS provider handles support. What would you do?

Everything around it. POS vendors support their application and terminals; the network, the internet connection, the Wi-Fi, the cameras, and the back-office computers are usually not theirs. When the registers stop working, the cause is more often the network or the connection than the POS software, which is why having one number to call for that layer matters.

  • How long should we keep camera footage?

Long enough to cover how late you typically find out about something. For most retail and hospitality operators that’s longer than the default the system shipped with, disputes and chargebacks routinely surface weeks later. We size storage to your actual look-back need rather than to whatever fits the drive that came in the box.
